Movies & champagne on a roof

Rooftop Cinema Club

Summer is just around the corner! This year, like every other year, the Seventh Art deserts the dark rooms blasting AC in order to take place outdoors in NY parks around the city. You know the big names by now, useless to present the free screenings on Bryan Park’s lawn, the Summerstage programming in Central Park or the view of the big screen and the Manhattan skyline from the Brooklyn Bridge Park. And, as every year, it’s a happy chaos. You have to get there very early, fight for every inch of lawn available and regularly scowl at your chatterbox neighbors in order to enjoy the screening. Exhausting!

Fortunately for you, we found an alternative for both movie buffs and epicureans. How about taking some altitude amidst Midtown skyscrapers, in a quiet spot, steps away from Times Square’s hustle and bustle? Comfortably seated in a deckchair with a small bottle of champagne and popcorn? With your own headphones and a blanket if gets chilly during the evening? Granted! Rooftop Cinema Club requisitioned the Yotel terrace this summer and transformed it into an ephemeral urban cinema. This film club, which began in London, has spread across the Atlantic to Los Angeles, Chicago and returns to New York for a second edition. They also have another location in Brooklyn on the OfficeOps’ rooftop in Bushwick (but without the « bubbles and popcorn » combo).

On the screen, a ukulele performance by Audrey Hepburn, a bowling game with Jeff Bridges, a romantic conversation with Woody Allen. There is something for everyone. From all-time American classics (Casablanca) to recent Oscar-winners (The Big Short) and now cult movies (The Godfather). Hurry to book your tickets, some screenings are still left in June. And keep an eye on the program as July’s line-up will soon be disclosed.
