Spot the odd one out: an industrial wasteland, the Williamsburg Bridge, a bike park, a vegetable garden.
No need to drive miles away to escape Manhattan’s urban jungle. If you are craving nature and some countryside, simply cross the Williamsburg Bridge. We promise you a total change of scenery with North Brooklyn Farms, an astonishing oasis of greenery in the heart of the city.
A vegetable experiment on a brownfield. This is the far-fetched idea of two friends, Ryan Watson and Henry Sweets. The two thirty-somethings decided to restore former industrial spaces and turn them into urban farms. Their new playground: the iconic Domino sugar refinery building at the foot of the Williamsburg Bridge. You can visit the farm from Tuesday to Sunday. They grow flowers and vegetables – radishes, zucchini, combo, thyme, chervil. Even better: every Sundays and some Thursdays during the summer they organize grand dinners under the stars.
There is some magic in having dinner at North Brooklyn Farms. Large communal tables are set in the garden. You have a perfect view of the sunset over New York’s skyline from right underneath the Williamsburg Bridge. At nightfall, stars and garlands of twinkling lights take over the show. A bucolic and convivial atmosphere, an enchanting setting and one of New York’s best views. On the plates it’s all veggies. A polenta cake with fresh vegetables from the garden. Grilled eggplant and kale salad with pickled peppers. Crunchy baby carrots flavored with cilantro. All products come directly from the farm. We promise you a vegetarian feast that will tantalize your tastebuds.
From farm to table, there is only one step. So hurry up and discover the charm of this little slice of countryside in the city before it is ruined by real estate developers.
